announcements > RRPE at the ASSA > URPE/RRPE 40th Birthday Celebration

The URPE/RRPE 40th Birthday Celebration was held in New Orleans on 3 January 2008 from 4-6 p.m. at the Allied Social Science Association annual meeting

There was a roundtable discussion with Lourdes Benería, Laurie Nisonoff, Arthur MacEwan, and Howard Wachtel, each representing a founding university/area. The roundtable was moderated by Frank Thompson. Attendees put on their party hats and celebrated, reflected, commented on, and reminisced about this historic milestone.

For those who could not attend, as well as for those who did attend and want to remember, Howard Wachtel’s recollections about the ferment in Ann Arbor, which contributed to URPE’s founding, can be downloaded here (pdf file). Howard Wachtel was the first managing editor of the RRPE.

More information about the history of URPE and heterodox economics is available on the URPE website and in Fred Lee's introduction to the RRPE Special Issue on the history of heterodox economics (RRPE, 2006, volume 38, no. 4)
